TAVAGNACCO: SEGNO E PRESENZA DI UN MAESTRO DEL NOVECENTO
TAVAGNACCO - SIGN AND PRESENCE OF A MASTER OF THE 2OTH CENTURY

Lealtà e bellezza. Rigore e abbaglio nell'Assoluto.

Loyaltyand beauiy. Strictness and dazzhng in the Absolute. Geometry, hence conscientiousness ofwhattheAbsolute might be, hence Art. After so many days of painting and research, on these as well as on other interior guide ines, Tavagnacco has introduced himselftothe 2Oth century European art.

Hewas born in 1920. When hewas butthirteen, by the beginning of summer, at the turn of spring, this guy committed himself fo the vocation of a painter drawing with a pendI a confession in "Self-Portrait". He underlines the word "Self-Portrait" with a decided sign. He offers a major identity of himself signing with his second nome followed by a single G. of the first nome. Date: 21.6.1933.

Guido as a young boy aimed at future with a piercing look towards the universe. He wanted to make himself, his surname Tavagnacco, be present. Be present in what? What is the programming adventure of a young boy that establishes his very identity in the same period he is subject to the transformation from a boy toa man, to love, to a chain of the future? This piece of paper, settled at the beginning of the production of Tavagnacco isa document that goes furtherthan the imposing of the already skilful drawer. lt isa module of construction of the painting to which the painter will commit himself far the rest of his life (he died in 1992). in a continuous research of signals revealing not what con be painted but what con be indicated: the white. On the foce of the Thirteen-Year-Old Self-Portrait, the use of light, centred on the forehead, announces the greatpainterofthesplendid lightcoloursthatwill stand forthe construction, thearchitecture of the maturity periodworks. An example of this loyaltyto his own sign intheadventure of the absolute in arts, is provided by 'The Crucifixion", 1960. Guido osa young boy is the memory of that splendour. On the head and on the hands of Christ he sets the basis of the triangular space of light which, osa mafter of fact, fills the composition rectangle. Courageously, as in most of his works, the module is repeated on one side of the painting upon one of the Highwaymen. lt is there to indicate that eternal light lies in every man. Besides the interior reasons of an artist like Tavognacco that clashes with the reality but follows a reasoning of mathematical strictness, there operate the constant alarms in front of the evolvement of an age of artthat con be defined as one of the most revolutionary ones.

Hence, there comes forth the necessity of providing an answer to the question: Who is Tavagnacco by the turn of a century likethisThathaswitnessedthecodification ofthe mostaudaciousavant-guordsin classicaliiy, inthe museums as well as in the minds of the young boys of nowadays?

The first answer isthatlavagnacco does not belong to The rear guard. On the contrary, hiswork is examined to obtain condlusions of a dimension that assigns fo him an important pIace in the history of iwentieth century ltalian Art. As it comes out from the analysis of his work, Tavagnacco has beforehand token the position of a mediation between the research of the abstract in its full sense and the necessity of an immediate communication through the visibility of tradition. Reality as it is - quite distinguished in Tavagnacco's "lnternals" or "Sunflowers" - is subjected to the filter of divisions of space and light towards a unique cloriiy. That leads to obtaining a most convincing Abstract Figuration. lt is also one of the most communicative ones as far as beauty and emotion is concerned.

Maternal Venetian lights cross from the motheriy bosom fo the death bed, the eyes, the landscapes, The sounds of Tavagnacco. The great Venetian light finds in Tavagnacco's green a mediation of the most intense and true ones of our painting. lt is the chassis that makes The works vibrate, even in those moments when the paìnter is summoned to the realism of the painting's functionality. His project of the Monument to the Martyrs of the Resistance erected in Monfolcone in 1979 divides the spaces with a farsweepingness that indicates light counter-established to the anti-monumentality of the horizontal plafform.

The work of Tavagnacco should be compared from the contemporary ort point of view fo Venetian painting. There should come outsuch condlusionsthatmightconfertothe artista renowned pIace inthetwentyfirstcenturyarthistory story about our century's. Upon The fiufte~ng melancholy of the Venetian light, upon Tavagnacco that closes and discloses subile thrills of Venicewaters, steams and rumourswe mightdwell at length writing wordsthat might perhaps fltalsothe lyrical realism and neorealismwith whichthe artistintroduced himself. Onthe contextofhisworksoneshould befter single out weII-defined and readable signals rather Thon on Iiterature and poetics. There intervenes another signal of presence in this difficult century: the use osa sign of the Green and The Black.

These twa maternal colours, The green of The earth and The black of the underground tunnel of death and mystery also belong tothe Veneiian painting. EI Greco knew itwell and operated inthis abyssof green and black as he passed through Venice. Just think. Guido Tavagnacco has surely Ioved (perhaps more than simply loved) thaf green-black. He has resolved fin dramatic accentuation, as in the violef colour of "The Wea~ness Circus", 1946, where poin and resurrection from the war remain just the same in spite of the joy that the war is aver. A "circus" where amusement is dlosed up in the solltude of the green and black. No faces, no animals. Only the carcass of a tree. Painted in a year when Europe felt lts blood and bones hot with war, this painting san ideological calI. Peace and War obtained by the use of the green and the black ore perfect fo the point of becoming representative of the artist, spotlighting him in our crowded century.

A "Self-Portrait With a Hat" bears the same date. Some years later There comes "MoTher in Green". The green colour becomes the kerchief on the head, a crown of life. We wilI Iater see in the years of his greaf maturh-y. how The artist onqogos hlmsolf fo tho ci ornaI In iho samo way ho looks o! the flrs! solf porlrall of hls lira. Tho ho! bocomos bkick, a splendour of deaTh. Alfogefher, lf Is a fouch of Interna! serenlty and exfreme palnflng mafurlfy; the black colour bocomos also ologance In the senso of a calm oyo upon tho world, Wo sec tho artlst as ho falthfully crassos through Iife and art tawards an unchanged gaal to which his work remains a rotating hinge, olive in aur visive culture.

The summan fo abstract vaid spaces carne Iater in Tavognacco's work, during his advanced pe~ad. These spaces swell with a centralii-y, immobile and bulky in calouras an image af reality. "External view", 1985. becornes an emblem, a canfession of this stylistic research of the artist wha is anxious of measuring himself fo the advanced research with the fiights towards avant-guards, the latter being at times just an updated return fo figuration.

Tavagnacco has faced the prablem with the canscience af an artist that has knawn palyvalent technical experiences and even with The polemical fury of cultura! honesty. He becomes a sculptar of The canvas. He annuIs rnatter. He pufs away. But he adds Iight. The universe is seen aut af the interior darkness. There always remains the internal light af the small first self-portrait. The threshald is actual. The light abstracfion transforms the triumph af the sunfiowers' yellaws in a white sun. The artist burns himself. He sets fire to The realil-y which, on its part, gets illuminated. He wins his battle and infroduces himself fa the research art of our century.
